When you purchase an EC seat, you're really just paying a fee to pick a particular seat, with extra legroom and free hard alcohol. It's not a difference in fare that you pay but rather a fixed price for each flight segment where you want an EC seat. Whether you have an award ticket (paid for your ticket in miles), a very cheap coach fare, or a relatively expensive coach fare (but not so expensive that you get EC for free!), the fee for the EC seat is the same and depends only on the length of the (international) segment.
