Do you mean those screens by the HEX ticket desk that say next train X minutes or do you check the actual time based on the timetable?
I normally look at those screens to decide whether HEX or tube. If I've just missed a HEX (or it's unlikely I'll make it down to the platform on time). I go for the tube which is usually more frequent but slower.
NOTE: the tube is only free between terminals if you have an Oyster card as there's barriers. If you don't have an Oyster card always go for the HEX.
