Since we are connecting (albeit a 20 hour connection) I thought we could follow the connections path upon arrival, talk to an agent in the AC or FL, then find our way from there to immigration. Am I hearing that is not possible?
If not, I suppose we could walk up to the ticket desk landside before leaving the airport.
And I am assuming that our bags will be checked through to the US, so no need to pick them up at LHR and recheck them the next morning, correct?
At LHR, you cannot just follow the connections signs to get to the Departures Hall and then just exit the airport as you can in the USA. To do so would require an escort and possibly raise some questions.
After clearing immigration and customs, I'd just go to the ticket counter in T3 Zone F. Per AA, the desk is open 700a to 1815.

As far as bags, you should be able to through check them. I've had family do so with no issue.
