There is no need for a return ticket - the probable question is how long you intend to stay, where you are going and the purpose of your visit. This works in both directions. The airline only wants to see your valid passport. Most border officials at airports in Canada are aware that you can re-enter the US by things that don't require a ticket and people with tickets aren't necessarily going to use them.
