You mentioned about the 747's aging, and I agree with you. I flew UA's 747 for the first time earlier this month and got the same impression - even though the cabin and seating are upgraded in the premium cabins (I was flying Global First), it just feels old. And I did not enjoy sitting in the "nose" section of the 744; it really felt stuffy and confined. After flying a few Drealiner flights now between NRT and LAX and DEN, it is time for UA to begin retiring the 744's.
