IMHO TK won't upgrade you to the next tier even if < 1 away.


However: In case you haven't booked yet...

... the UA TLV-CHI-fare should allow different routings. Even TLV-NYC-HOU-ORD should be possible.

TLV-NYC TPM 5666
NYC-HOU TPM 1415
HOU-CHI TPM 933
R/T = 16028

Otherwise try routing via IAD:
TLV-NYC 5666
NYC-WAS 215
WAS-CHI 594
R/T = 12950
