There is no elite benefit entitlement unless the Elite stays. That means no entitlement to room upgrade, no entitlement to free internet.

This would be abuse and in theory IHG can cancel your elite membership and confiscate your points.

Your friends could get lucky, as each hotel is a franchise, and some will be more particular than others in looking for such gaming of stays and benefits.
