My Wraparound upgrades at this hotel have come without using the $20 trick. In those cases, I did give them $20 afterwards.
You can also negotiate upgrades by paying a little more per night. That's usually the route I go on weekends, when upgrades are tougher.
If you stay during the week, I'd imagine that negotiating a free upgrade is easier.
