My questions is whether mixed groups can regularly use this Pre checkpoint area, with non-Pre travellers using the standard lane within the checkpoint.
I'm very interested to know the answer to this.
The folks who have answered so far -- lost*in*cyberspace and takeahike66 -- were trying to be helpful, but have clearly misunderstood what hoopics was asking, presumably because they don't know the situation at IAD (which is rather unusual).
IAD has a separate checkpoint for Pre. Not just a separate lane or a separate line, but an entirely separate
checkpoint. That checkpoint includes a regular (non-Pre) lane (presumably for randomly selected fliers), but it's unmarked and doesn't have its own line. The question is whether non-Pre travelers who are traveling together with Pre travelers can use that checkpoint (in the non-Pre lane). If you haven't flown out of IAD (or another airport with a similarly unusual setup), you won't be able to answer the question.
