LAX wouldn't be a first choice. Do check options from YYC, YVR and even SEA to NRT. If Japan ends up not being your final destination, then maybe schedule a 2-day/night Tokyo stopover before continuing on to elsewhere in Asia. You should also perform your due diligence on type of aircraft being used on the flights under consideration, particularly for Y/Y+ class. Seatguru.com has a comparison chart tool that can be useful.
The only reason I was considering LAX was that J fares are typically less than from YVR or YYC. I even found some decent priced F fares on AA. But time is definitely on my side with the tickets and AC is always running sales to Asia
