I've never had trouble - just be willing to be flexible with routings. You may have to take ORD-LAX/SFO or YVR to make it work, so be willing to do that.

The other thing - if I were you, I'd buy some miles or find a way to get into F if you're planning on CX. It's not that much more and the experience is absolutely killer.

Finally, if they find you a route, even if it's not totally what you want, go ahead and do it. As long as the start and finish are the same, you can make adjustments to the routing up until departure.

It helps that there are quite a few CID-ORD flights every day. I really want to leave the Friday before Thanksgiving but could leave a day or two earlier if need be. I definitely want to have my seats well before 6 months out so that shouldn't be an issue.
