Proactive rebooking on mileage run?

All: tnx for the input on my previous thread regarding power. As it turned, out, I had to be rebooked on a different day owing to ATC issues at EWR. Wound up being on an A320 with wifi!

I've got a second mileage run coming up - the famous DC to Burbank trip. Ive noticed that United 5600 is running consistently late (except yesterday). I'm connecting to a SFO-EWR flight at 11:00 pm, and then onwards to BWI (UA 4848)

There is an 11:59 SFO-EWR flight that connects to 4848. Will UA switch me to the 11:59 flight without a change fee, in advance, given the perennial lateness of UA 5600?

I'll also note that the 11:00 pm flight is much more crowded than the 11:59.
