Arrive on 4/Nov - Travel to Kyoto (JR pass) - You can reach Kyoto in time for dinner. Reserve 2 nights at a hotel in Kyoto. Make no other reservations for the trip - Leave the option open to extend your time in Kyoto if you like it. In addition to sites in the city, I recommend getting up into the hills and experiencing the autumn colors. AFAIK, there should be plenty of availability in Tokyo in early November.

When you do transfer to Tokyo, I'd just book one hotel for the whole time. I don't see the point in switching hotels from Shinjuku to Ginza or vice versa. They're 30 minutes apart. No biggie.

I think your instinct is right on timing - Kyoto hotels typically charge more for a night before a weekend or holiday. Some Tokyo hotels are the opposite. Some hotels will give a better rate for 3 consecutive nights etc.

Check out ikyu.com or rakuten travel to find rates.
So you suggest getting the JR pass even if the initial outlay for the other option is cheaper? (26,500 vs 28,300) Just curious why.

I guess in terms of choosing 2 different hotels, we're just thinking more for the nightlife. I read that trains stop running after midnight? I prefer not to take cabs late at night especially for far distances so we were thinking of staying 2 nights near Roppongi and 2 nights near Shinjuku. Actually, would Shibuya be better than Shinjuku for nightlife?

Thanks!
