The OP should also look into transferring MR points to ANA, if he can find low-tier availability for UA for DTW-EWR-Europe-EWR-DTW. If the routing is kept to under 9,000 miles, the trip should only cost 43,000 MR points per person. Just check to make sure that ANA is still not assessing surcharges for award travel on UA.
I booked this award for a trip in June of this past summer. My surcharges were only about ~$190 RT, and I think that's because I was flying into the UK which tends to have higher surcharges, I think? Good luck!
