I've never seen it in writting on AF site, but I've seen it in several threads and have been able to do it myself and other DL FFs I know. On a similar trip to JNB from the US like yours I and a DL PM friend were in Economy Comfort on the outbound KLM legs for free when we called the PM line (the KLM site tried to charge us) and same with AF seat plus, but we decided against them as I didn't want to sit in the A380 upper deck exit row since there is no window or side storage bin, but we would have gotten them for free.
Same kind of trouble for me.
Booked a trip on DL.dumb with segments on AF metal.
FB E+ status recognized on DL (ecocomfort free inside US, rebate for intercontinental) but was asigned middle seats in the middle of the plane on first floor (2 flights are with "double decker") for my my CDG <-> US on AF metal.
Got in touch with AF twitter service could asigned me "uper deck seats" but did n't get "siège +"
On one flight was once able to get a siege + with KLM.com (but not an exit row one : impossible) but I am stuck to this seat as no otherone shows disponible ! (flight in march '14 !
)
For the other flight asked another time AF twitter service: the gal tried to assign me exit rows but said: I don't understand, I tried but anytime the system don't keep you in this seat...
But now that you told me 91A don't worth it... I 'll keep 92...
Note: the system never wanted to charge me only show unavailable...
