New York hotels fluctuate greatly but there are times when even the most basic 4* is over $500 per night. Priceline/Hotwire can be your best option...although hotels may be sold out altogether which happens as well
I have a feeling if rates are that elevated it means bookings are strong and there's probably not much inventory the hotels need to dump into the opaque channels, until very close-in (if they don't sell out). So I wouldn't expect substantial discounts, although obviously you can get an idea on Hotwire.
