TBIT is about 300-400 feet down a sidewalk from T-4. LAX is not laid out like JFK where it's practically impossible to walk around between terminals.
Back when AA was still in both T-3 and T-4 and security wasn't so bad, I used to make the walk rather than wait for the airside bus, which as a lot longer as it went across the whole front side of TBIT.
The big reason to want the airside connection is to avoid having to go through security again.
