In the old days you could use a future dated ticket to get through the gate guard - ticket agents would focus on the train number and rarely on the date of the ticket. Same with conductors, looking at destination and number since the date was printed in smaller text. With e-ticketing and gate scanning, that is now moot.
Gate scanning? When did they start that? Haven't seen it at PHL as of my last trip in May--you still just hold up your boarding pass or Passbook pass or whatever you have for the line guard as you walk by and go down the escalator.
