The $300 fare OP speaks of is a refundable Y fare. OP is comparing that with a non refundable F seat. Am I the only one who sees this???

I agree with you 100%. Refundable or non refundable. If OP wants to sit in FC - it becomes a nonrefundable fare. Therefore, OP should buy a nonrefundable fare on US or UA - sit in Y and save $150-$200. If OP needs a refundable ticket, why is FC even an option.
