+1. There are no blanket rules. It depends what the policy says. And read it VERY carefully. I had a friend who used to be in the insurance industry who once joked to me that the object of an insurance business is to collect premiums, not to pay out claims!

And if same day travel is critical, just having the insurance to cover it won't be the whole story if there are no other seats available on other flights.
