I know now I should have made more of an effort, but unfortunately at the time of booking the Amex Travel site did not tell me my booking code (it still doesn't); I was only able to figure this out after getting home.
As for calling, like I stated, I was unable to call as I lost my cell phone; I was unable to communicate with the local people (my hotel no less) that I wanted to call internationally. So I did what I could think of which was to book a new flight.
