I am pretty sure any roller bought for a 3 yo kid will be carried by parents most of the time. Just get a small backpack for small toys etc (i got toddler sized eddie bauer from target) and use your bag for the rest.
Small business case rollers often can go over handle of normal carryons - maybe this can be an option - again assume you'll have to deal with it quite often.
