I recall reading recently that city of Oakland in dire financial shape and has cut back significantly on police and public services. I suggest staying at Ren or Marriott in Walnut Creek and taking BART.

I worked at Clorox several years ago and it is located nearby. The main parking lot was referred to as the 'rape lot' and escorts were provided for anyone working late. It has improved a lot since then, but appears to be still a place to be careful.
