Don't know about NY, but in Los Angeles, AT&T LTE is way slower than Verizon LTE. My brother's iPhone 5 on Verizon beats me (on AT&T) every time everywhere in LA.
This is another one of these times where the companies have tried to convince us that speed matters, when that's probably one of the least important things to most users. Unless you plan on running a hotspot, 99% of smartphone users won't notice a difference between say 5Gbps or 10Gpbs. Both are plenty fast for a phone, unless you plan on downloading large files all the time...
It's like the folks who rush out to get the 802.11ag (500Mbps!!!) routers when they have a 5Mbps internet connection.
