This happens to me frequently when I book *A reward travel ~10-11 months out, and then the schedule or plane type changes. With UA at least if one segment was still in F you would get charged the F redemption level for the whole trip.
Question: with your booking method how many points would it have been for F/J segments vs. F/F segments? I think your recourse is with the ticketing airline and not the operating airline.
That said and as a general reminder to all: be proactive and keep an eye on your open itineraries for just this type of situation.
