I booked a hotel in BKK leading up to 1st day of Songkran holiday and plan to leave the city that night by taking a train to Chiang Mai, and fly to Krabi 3 days later.

On further thought, do you think its better to fly from BKK to Krabi first to wait out the craziness of Songkran in Chiang Mai, then fly to Chiang Mai later on that week. One of the downsides is that we would be backtracking from south to north, when our next destination is Kuala Lumpur. Our BKK hotel dates are set due to the holiday. We plan to fly CX from LAX-BKK, and HKG-LAX. Thanks!

Day 1 LAX-BKK
Day 2 BKK
Day 3 BKK
Day 4 (start of Songkran) BKK-Chiang Mai by overnight train into Day 5
Day 5 Chiang Mai
Day 6 Chiang Mai
Day 7 Chiang Mai - Krabi by plane
Day 8 Krabi
Day 9 Krabi
Day 10 Krabi-KUL
Day 11 KUL
Day 12 KUL-HKG
Day 13 HKG
Day 14 HKG
Day 15 HKG-LAX
I cannot speak to the festival, but I recently went on an all Thailand trip.

Since inter-Asia flights are cheap, I would recommend flying and saving your travel time. If I recall correctly, the train ride north took up a lot of time.

On a side note, we loved CNX and wished we spent more time there. The day trip with www.thaielephanthome.com was one of the greatest experiences in my life (even though relatively expensive for Thailand). Also we did a great small group cooking class in CNX.

Feel free to PM me if you want other thoughts.
