Yes, that is correct. I said that you get the free bag regardless of WHERE you book (united.com, Travelocity, etc.). You still have to use the qualifying card, in theory.
Thank you for clarifying your post. The line "as long as your Mileage Plus number is attached to the reservation" could have been taken as that was all you needed and you did not need to use the card.
