Strange for those of us who know the fare rules by heart for each fare code perhaps.

Perhaps OP was in a hurry, and saw there was a non-KL flight available first, and assumed that, like most forms of public transport, outbound and return are not co-dependent.

I suggest asking as nicely as you can and discussing your circumstances openly. The social media team on Facebook and Twitter are quite good. Also you could call one of their other offices in other countries, you can use Skype to make the telephone call cheaper, as suggested above.
Perhaps just ask as many KLM agents as you can find until one says yes!
