Agree. When I had regular business in Detroit a couple of years ago, SFO-DTW was often 3x the price of SFO-DTW-CMH/MKE/TPA/fill in the city. I used to do the hidden city trick once every couple of months without any repercussions. I just no showed and never called to cancel the last leg. One off is not a problem. Once a week over an extended period is asking for trouble.
