What sort of fare is it? If its just a special economy, then you might be able to salvage the ticket by paying a non show fee, change fee and admin fee for use at a later date. You can't use it for refund or for future travel to another destination.
If its a full fare ticket, you might get the refund less the no show, change and admin fee.
That's also the other problem I have. I usually book through Expedia, but for some reason their site was down, so I used Amex Travel; the link on the Amex site that's suppose to show me my fare basis is also broken, so I do not know what fare I booked in. I imagine it can't be too a fare because it was eligible to be upgraded through UA (though there was no availability). I guess I will have to just call to check.
I gave the US office a call, but they said they couldn't do anything and I had to call the China office. I was able to get my fare basis, and looks like it was a B-fare (BE90CNPO)
