After maxing out my BCP, I had the Penfed 5% gas card to fall back on to rebate those gas purchases.
Unfortunately, with it becoming 3%, there is no point in having the Penfed around anymore as the BCP gives 3% too, AND Amex looks like they know what they are doing (which I am a reluctant to say about Penfed right now)
However, if the BCP was to take a nose dive, I would be stuck with a horrible 1% cashback on everything VISA that's been sockdrawered so long that I don't even remember how it looks like.
So, please, recommend a few 5% (or more) cashback cards. Does not have to be gas: groceries are even better and office supplies not too bad (not the Chase Ink or ilk though).
I have heard good things about these :
Fort Knox: good match, but do they hand out credit cards to people in southern california? anyone in southern california with a Fort Knox gas card?
Cash+: Signature and not something I will possibly qualify for (look below)
Forward: not too bad, but office supply stores don't stock gas gift cards as much as groceries do.
Discover IT: not too bad, but I wish they had groceries often. They have gas stations through September 2013 but the other categories are so meh. More importantly, not something I will possibly qualify for (look below)
Ink Bold: I don't want to claim a business and be turned down by a lending officer after being interrogated (look below)
Sallie Mae: not too bad, but had some questions
.... something better?
My background (to substantiate those "not something I will possibly qualify for" lines above):
I am nearing 30 but my credit history is just a bit over 2 years old. I came here as an immigrant in 2011 and started off with 3 secured credit cards (the last one just graduated this month)
Multiple lenders have told me that my 2 year old credit history will never land me a VISA Signature, so I have never applieds for these cards (although I feel like the BCP and Penfed apps were pretty strict and "VISA Signature quality" credit?)
My current utilization is 2% with the following lines:
Unfortunately 5 HPs within in the last 6 mo (2 for CU applications, 2 for cards and 1 for utilities)
The history is spotless (no lates etc).
i. few weeks old Penfed Visa Platinum Rewards $4k
ii. few weeks old BCP $6k
iii. 1.5 years DCU (Credit Union) $2k
iv. 1.2 years FCU (Credit Union) $10k
v. 2 years Wells Fargo $1.2k
Scores for august:
DCU Equifax FICO score: 725
TransUnion: 739
creditkarma: 743
creditsesame: 767
