Sobeys and other retailer do not earn points for purchasing Giftcard. ESSO might be the only exception that do earn points on GC purchases (except ESSO GC) and Shoppers might be the only exception that do earn points for purchases it's own Shoppers GC.
My triple dip is the following:
- AMEX at Shoppers for Shoppers GC (to get Shoppers points)
- Shoppers GC for Non-Shoppers GC at Shoppers (no points)
- use those GC that get points/miles at those stores (i.e. ESSO, Starbucks, etc...)
I tried this and I can vouch for it. The Starbucks cards were buried behind a bunch of others but once I found them the cashier was more than willing to do the two transactions (she thought it was a smart idea). So on a $25 Starbucks I received 50 AMEX MR points (2x drugstore bonus), 250 Shoppers Optimum points and 3-10 Starbucks Stars (depending on whhat drinks I ordered)
Thanks for the advice. Its too bad you can't get Aeroplan points on GCs
