I disagree on both these points. I find the spinner wheels no worse and no better over rough ground. (Note I'm talking in particular about Rimowa spinner wheels, I have had other makes of spinners which weren't so nice to roll with).

And to run for a gate i find the spinners much, much quicker (and if you prefer you can still pull it like a 2-wheeler if you prefer). It just feels more natural to have your hand in front of you while running.
I find a spinner is great for running, even on rougher surfaces. And I find it more manoeuvrable than a two-wheeler.

But here's something I've found: my Topas (26") spinner can handle all the different sidewalk/pavement surfaces of London (Victorian flagstones, concrete, tar, sheets of iron over roadworks, even some cobbles), but goes crazy when I attempt to take it over the tactile paving (the coloured tiles with the little bumps) used on pedestrian crossings: all four wheels start to vibrate and spin in all directions, and the case grinds to a halt. I usually switch to two-wheel mode and drag the case over the bumps, or in some cases lift it completely. As a result of this, I've subconsciously started seeking paths that avoid tactile paving, although the stuff is ubiquitous in central London.

The problem seems to be with the spacing of the wheels. My Rimowa is quite old, so this may no longer be an issue.
