I recently booked AF and KLM flights for this October and November. I tried in person at JFK & ATL, I tried calling Paris directly on a calling card(almost used $50.00), I tried "tweeting" and the resounding answer from both KLM and AF is you can't. AF went so far as to say that DM would not be considered for upgrades PERIOD regardless if your within Europe! I asked about "op-up's" and the answer in person at JFK was that they will find somebody.
