while amanoi rooms are not perfect/etc, aman and gathy clearly continue to perfect and learn each time a new property opens, whether aman or not.

Concur. I am debating between Amanoi and the Cheval Blanc in the Maldives for next year's beach trip. Both are Gathy. The beach (and to be honest, the design of the villas) at the CB seem superior, but I am pretty certain the Aman will be a better resort, service-wise, and may offer better privacy. Since I've been to both the Maldives and Vietnam, specific country is not a huge deciding factor. There are plusses and minuses to both.
