It made more sense in 1999-2000 when it was "in the vicinity of SJC" and SJC was still an up-and-coming focus city.
Plus, before that each of the other majors (bar Delta, which I haven't had a chance to fly since the 1980s because before the NW merger they pretty much didn't fly where I wanted to go) had pooped on me one too many times leaving AA the last man standing when a friend convinced me I needed to get status on
some airline to reduce the odds of these things happening.
I'm guessing that if the merger falls through, AA will not want to rock the boat with major FF devaluations, since they will clearly be in third place among the major legacies in terms of both size and routes. What would attract new flyers to them in that case? And why scare off existing ones?
Here's hoping! I think we're overdue, but then again, the beauty of pessimism is that when you're right, you're less disappointed, and when you're wrong, something good has happened.
