Some great advice by all, given me much to think about, we're flying with two friends also. So Cathay P Gold for one, wont help I guess, quite right too, I'm just an Amex point monkey, not a "proper" frequent flyer ;-)

If not already booked in advance by Golds, these seats open up for general selection about 3 days before you fly. Many people seem to have spent hours of angst on this board trying to get these seats! If I were you I wouldn't worry about getting them, I would book 2AK if available and eat together with one of you on the buddy seat. 5EF are also good seats if you are a couple who like to be together all through the flight and talk to each other - they are in F after all!
On a day flight you are not going to worry about galley noise. Overnight I would go further forward, especially on the 747 where there is no galley at the front of the F cabin (for fairly obvious reasons!) On the 777 there is a galley at the front and the back which makes me dislike flying F on the 777 due to traffic past your seat wherever you sit...
