I'm sure this has been discussed before, but there seems to be little or no downside for AC. It would cost them nothing to allow SEs and Es to standby for same-day earlier flights. I am heading home today and finished my business in Toronto early, so I headed to the airport hoping to go at 1:10pm instead of 3:25 as booked, but to no avail. Two days ago I flew YUL-YYZ and showed up 6.5 hours early and they let me standby, on the same fare class: N.

I suppose people might start booking on late-day and evening flights and exploiting the flexibility standbys would permit, but how much of a problem would this really be?
