looks like chicago beat me to the answer. i successfully did this at MKE this past Friday for my ATL-LAX flight in two days. i am the companion on my wife's pass and she was not present. the first lady i spoke to said it couldn't be done but i told her the "i've had it done before" bit and she asked another agent or two about it and both confirmed it was possible. she might have been the only one in that area that didn't know, actually, as my friend i was traveling with was getting help from another agent for him and his wife. they assigned us row 22. i did not mind being towards the back - just glad we're all sitting together and that i'm not in a middle seat.
