That said, I made 2 trips to Tokyo in the last 2 months and each time used my Chase Sapphire as my primary card in shops, restaurants big and small, taxis etc. and didn't encounter any issue. A case of YMMV maybe?
I'm quite sure it's a YMMV thing depending on the card reader a place has - something no one can know in advance. FWIW - the place where the CS cards didn't work today (my husband and I have separate cards) was a 2* Michelin restaurant in Ginza. We used our AMEX card instead. Robyn
