Not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but when travelling in third world countries only, I often leave "tips" as a way to give a charitable donation directly to the person who will spend it. Since most people give to charity, I find this a way to give while leaving out the middle man--a BIG problem with many charities in North America today. Hotel maids are generally very low on the economic scale and that is a place I often leave a "tip".
