I would say there is nothing to worry about safety wise. So any choices should be made on cost, service, flight times and availability etc etc. I have flown both and while I have no problems with Virgin my loyalty is with BA so they are my first choice. I can't comment on the Airbus A340 as I flew Virgin 747 last time and that is my preferred aircraft also.
