Yes its a bad deal if
  1. you already have plenty Avios
  2. You have plenty time to wait for Avios to arrive from other sources

But if you dont have any, or not enough, but you need to book the flights pronto, as I have shown above, if the dates are available, then it can be a better option than a cash booking.
