I agree. Amtrak's complete lack of a decent same-day change policy is why I have not taken any reserved-seating trains (other than UA codeshare trains to EWR) in close to a year. (I drive instead.)
Amtrak will regain my business when they institute one.
A warning about booking backup reservations: if you have two reservations that overlap, Amtrak will cancel one (or both) of them.
