Without knowing the specifics of your particular ticket its impossible to say, but if it was so inflexible that it was cheaper for you to cancel it, then I imagine there would be a cancellation fee of more than £30. If the tax refund is less than the cancellation fee then they waive the rest of the cancellation fee (over and above the tax refund), and I suspect thats what happened here.
