While n/a to the OP, I've found that AS will allow overnight layovers on a domestic award a-b-c if the a-b flight is scheduled to arrive after the departure of the last b-c flight of the day (probably allowing for MCT). And IIRC, I've seen international awards where the layover was > 24 hours under similar circumstances.
Well A-B-C allows for a stopover enroute, so it may have been a stopover.
