On topic, in counties foreign to me supermarkets are my favorite tourist thing. Hardware stores also. I no longer buy souvenirs, but still enjoy my #14 cowbell from a small-town hardware store in Switzerland. (Yes, it clanged in my luggage on trains, buses and planes for the next few weeks until I thought to stuff a sock in it, but it was real, not from a tourist shop.)

"I got a fever... and only prescription is more cowbells!"

When we traveled Europe we started collecting cowbells from all the towns we visited (much easier to find in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland).
