Perhaps I'm missing something - but - looking at the pictures - isn't that child rather large to sit on someone's lap during a flight? I know that a lap child has to be < 24 months - and this child was 22 months. Still...

Apart from anything else - I think there's a safety issue. A large child like this who isn't strapped into a seat can become an unsecured flying object if there's an emergency. This is dangerous for the child - and perhaps for other passengers as well.

Also - this was a pretty short haul flight. And I wonder what the OP's wife had to unpack and repack for this flight - and where all this stuff was when Mr. L. got to his seat? Robyn

No storage for these seats on the ground in front of the seats.
