In my experience, taking a demanding stance is a very good way ensure you will never get a nice upgrade. Honey, not vinegar, gets the upgrade. And there is a large amount of randomness to it -- they give the 2, 3 and 4+ class upgrades when they have extra cars sitting around.
Ford Fiesta is a B (compact) which is one class above A (economy).

I'm always very nice and professional. I usually don't interact w/ anyone from Hertz until I'm driving my Gold Choice car out the exit gates, and the agent there gets my DL, scans my car etc. So, that would be the time for honey or vinegar.
Also, regarding other post. That statement regarding Pres Circle, while it does't state this supercedes requirement of midsize/intermediate for gold choice, it doesn't say anything at all, one way or another. It is a clear statement, without any exceptions, that states, as a Pres Circle member, you get your one class upgrade, if you don't like it, you can go to Gold Choice. There is no fine print on this. And as I said, in practice, I have had 1 problem, and still received the car, out of probably 80 over the last year and a half.
