Prebook your seat which has a bassinet (most bulkhead seats) and you should be fine. My son is 2 at present, when he was one we took an 11 hr flight with him and the seat next to us was empty but he refused to sit there wanted to be on the lap or laying next to one of us. Since it was a business class seat it was OK and he slept next to the mom most of the time.
